    Shuji Nakamura was born in Ehime, Japan. After studying electrical engineering at the University of Tokushima, he worked at the chemical company Nichia in Tokushima. This is where he conducted his Nobel Prize-awarded work.

    Lighting plays a major role in our quality of life. The development of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has made more efficient light sources possible. Creating white light that can be used for lighting requires a combination of red, green, and blue light. Blue LEDs proved to be much more difficult to create than red and green diodes. During the 1980s and 1990s Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano improved the material quality of GaN. Shuji Nakamura successfully developed an emitting layer of InGaN and then finally invented high-efficient blue/green LEDs using InGaN double hetero-(DH) structures.

    Hiroaki Ohta served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University. He also conducted research at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2010, he joined McKinsey & Company, where he worked on strategic projects across industries. In 2016, he joined ACSL Inc. (formerly Autonomous Control Systems Laboratory Ltd.), a drone technology startup, and led the company as President and CEO, taking it public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers market in 2018. He later served as Chairman before stepping down in March 2022. Since 2021, he has served as Advisor to the President of Waseda University for Innovation Strategy. He co-founded Blue Laser Fusion.
