Photonics West 2026 marked another highly successful five-day event in San Francisco, held January 17–22. Blue Laser Fusion appreciated the opportunity to present at the conference and the strong interest and inquiries from attendees at this leading international technology event.
Trevor Cohen, lead scientist in laser fusion development at Blue Laser Fusion, presented at Photonics West on Tuesday, sharing key updates on the company’s progress. His presentation highlighted advancements in laser power enhancement, new laser optics innovations, and ongoing collaborations with government and research institutions in both Japan and the United States.
“We had strong engagement throughout the event, particularly during slides outlining BLF’s CBC-OEC platform, the 140,000× laser power enhancement milestone, and key laser system requirements,” Trevor reported.” Many of the talks during the Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) session discussed the challenges of scaling the supply chain of diode lasers to support the development of a gigawatt power plant using a NIF-like approach. The conference’s emphasis on this major challenge further validated BLF’s strategy since the CBC-OEC platform requires significantly less pump lasers at scale. After the session, numerous companies and researchers approached the team to explore collaboration and technical opportunities, highlighting increasing industry momentum and support for laser-based fusion.”

According to SPIE, the event attracted more than 23,000 registrants from 40 countries, reflecting the global and collaborative nature of the photonics and advanced technology industries. Held from January 17–22, the conference featured more than 4,200 technical presentations across 100 conferences, four stages of industry-focused panels and presentations, 49 courses, and approximately 1,600 exhibitors across five exhibitions: Photonics West, BiOS, Quantum West, AR | VR | MR, and the inaugural Vision Tech.
Blue Laser Fusion expect to continue providing ongoing development updates and continuing to share its vision for the near-term future of fusion energy as a leading laser fusion team at future industry events.
